I have always liked perfume. A good one changes how the whole day feels.
The ones I liked most were the expensive ones. Buying those was never going to happen, so I wore what I could and kept looking at the rest.
And then people kept asking me where they could buy it.

The ones I liked most were the expensive ones. Buying those was never going to happen, so I wore what I could and kept looking at the rest.
After a few years I knew them well. Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Extrait de Parfum, and what makes each one different. Which one is right for summer and which one for winter. Which one men like, which one women like, which one everyone likes.
And the notes — the top note, the heart note, the base note, and what each one does.
The more I understood, the more one thought kept coming back.
Nobody taught me. I went and found out. What goes inside a perfume, and where to get each thing. Then I brought it all home and started.
The first ones were never the same twice. They were not bad — they were just a little different every time. One would be right, the next one not.
Every batch taught me something, and slowly my hands learned what to do. I made them for myself and I wore them, and that is how I learned.
After some time I could make the same one again, any day I wanted. Then I just kept making new ones.
Then people started asking. At work first.
After that it happened everywhere — at their homes, at mine, at family functions. Wherever I went, somebody asked.
People kept asking, so I started making a little more than I needed and gave some away. They were happy, and that was the whole reason.
Then their friends asked too. Everyone I gave a bottle to was asked about it by somebody else, and they would come back to me.
It had grown past something I could do on the side, so I put a price on it. Everybody paid it.
My studies had just finished around then. I could have looked for a job, but people were already waiting for what I made. So I chose this instead.
The name came the same easy way. No list, no meeting. I liked how it sounded and it felt right.
Soon orders were coming from other states, and some from other countries. Doing it all through messages was slow for them and for me, so I built the online store. Now they can see every new one and order it themselves.
One thing was still missing. You cannot smell words.
People would order, wear it and like it, but often say it was a little different from what they had pictured. That happens to everyone who buys perfume online.
First I sorted them out — which one for summer, which one for winter, which one for the rain and which one for humid days. It helped, but it was not enough.
Then the idea came. In a shop you smell it first and then you buy. Online you cannot. But my perfume could travel, and it was already travelling.
You smell it first.
Then you pay.
You pay first.
Then you find out.
So I made the tester. 3ml, Rs 49, just enough to cover the cost. Order as many as you like and wear them for a few days on your own skin.
What you spend on testers comes off the bottle you choose, so trying it costs you nothing.
