Gym perfume, tested through the sweat: three that held, one that curdled

Most scents are judged in the first ten minutes, on clean skin, in air conditioning. The gym asks a different question, and it asks it twenty minutes after you stop.

The gym off Sindhu Bhavan Road has honest air conditioning. Cold at the free weights, useless in the corner where the treadmills are. By four in the afternoon in September that room is holding two kinds of heat, the kind coming off the bodies and the wet kind that walks in every time somebody opens the door.

That's the air a gym scent has to survive. Not a shop.

Because that's where most perfume gets judged, isn't it. Ten minutes after spraying, clean skin, standing still under a light. Every bottle on earth passes that test. The gym asks something harder and it asks late, not while you're under the bar but twenty minutes after you've stopped, when your skin is hot and open and whatever went on at eight in the morning comes back up to find you.

Four scents, four afternoons. Same shirt, same routine, same hour. Two sprays, one on each wrist. Forty minutes of work, ten of stretching, and then the part that actually matters: half an hour sitting in the car and the lobby with the windows up, sniffing the back of my own hand every five minutes like a lunatic and asking whoever would answer.

Nine people across four days. Mostly the same two trainers and the man at the desk, who by day three had started seeing me coming. One woman refused to answer at all, which is fair.

SYNOR Aqua Royale

This one won, and it won late.

It's a blue aquatic with something underneath it, and that something is the whole trick. The opening is sharp and a bit bitter, more peel than juice, and for the first hour it behaves like every other fresh thing on the shelf. Then the difference shows up. A plain aquatic thins out on hot skin and leaves a sour edge behind it; this drops onto a dry woody base and just sits there, quiet, slightly salty.

Twenty minutes off the treadmill it was still readable and it hadn't gone sweet. One of the trainers said it smelled like a swimming pool. He meant it kindly and I'm taking it kindly. Five hours before it stopped being a scent and became a suggestion.

Sweat doesn't ruin a scent. It just reads out whatever was already written in the base.

SYNOR Aqua Chill

The easiest one to like and the shortest one to own. Cold, clean, a bit of green at the top, nothing in it to argue with. If your gym bag lives in the back of the car, this is the bottle that will never embarrass you.

Here's what you should know before you spend on it though. It doesn't last. Three and a half hours and it was finished, and the post-workout window caught it right at the end of its life, so what I was smelling was mostly the memory of it. Nobody said anything bad. Nobody said anything at all, which for an eleven-in-the-morning gym is arguably correct, but don't expect it to still be with you at dinner.

SYNOR Urban Hero

Not aquatic, this one. Green, slightly bitter, more crushed stem than open water, sitting on a dry wood that turns up early and refuses to leave. On paper it's the wrong pick for 68% humidity. It was the surprise of the four and I didn't see it coming.

Heat pushes sweet scents up and out of the skin. It doesn't do much to a dry green one. It flattens it, and flat green still reads clean, which is the entire job. At the twenty-minute mark this was the one closest to how it had smelled walking in.

Two people picked it out without being asked. Both wanted to know what it was. Across four afternoons that happened exactly once otherwise.

SYNOR Eros Flame

This is where it went wrong, and I'm not going to dress it up.

On a cold evening it's a genuinely good bottle. In a gym in September it was a mistake, and the mistake was mine. The tags on it say date, evening, party. I ignored all three to see what would happen.

What happened is that the sweet amber behaved itself for about an hour on hot skin, and then the heat found the vanilla sitting in it. By the time I got to the car it had gone thick and syrupy, the way sweet things do when they stop being a scent and start being a smell. Two of the nine said it was too much. One said it had given her a headache and she was standing a metre away.

Nothing wrong with the perfume. Everything wrong with where I took it.

So what actually decides it

Not the price. Not the longevity number on the box either, which is the thing I expected to matter and it didn't.

It's the base. Whatever a scent is built on is what heat and sweat hand back to you an hour later, turned up. A dry woody or green base comes back dry and green. A sweet one comes back sweeter than you wanted it, in a lift, next to somebody.

Which means the top notes that sell a bottle in a shop are gone by the time they'd count. Read the base, ignore the opening. Wood under an aquatic, or wood under a green. Keep the sweet ambers for the evening where they're worth having.

I should have tested all four on somebody else's skin as well and I didn't, so take this as one man's chemistry. All of them are ₹49 to try and the ₹49 comes back as credit if you buy the bottle. Take one to your own gym before you believe a word of this.

The notes, as recorded

Topmandarin, petitgrain, sea salt
Heartseaweed, clary sage, white pepper
Basecedar, amber wood, musk
